Runway Modeling
High fashion runway modeling, often referred to as “Haute Couture,” is the presentation of designer clothes, either at fashion shows or in publications. The modeling of jewelry and cosmetics also falls into this category. Designers request seasoned, experienced models, and new, fresh faces.
Runway modeling is considered the most glamorous type of live modeling. It requires confidence, grace and insight and it is one of the most effective ways to gain exposure in the fashion world. A runway model’s job is to play the part and assume the attitude of the designer’s creation. The requirements for local and national runway models vary greatly. In the local market there is flexibility based on the target market.
Models can be petite (under 5’8”), full figure, child and lifestyle models aged between 4 and 60, and of all ethnic backgrounds. On the national level, the requirements for runway modeling are very stringent: |
- Height 5’9” and up for women, 5’11” to 6’2” for men
- Weight proportional to height – but a lean lanky look is most desired
- Long legs, especially from floor to knee
- Women with a long neck preferred
- A good complexion
- Starting age is typically 14-18 years

Editorial
Editorial modeling is the most confusing an indefinable division in the modeling industry. You will find editorial models gracing the pages of venerable magazines such as Cosmopolitan, W, Vogue and ELLE. These models work for specific campaigns such as Gucci, Guess, Hugo Boss, Armani, Polo, Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, Victoria’s Secret and Prada. Editorial modeling is both the most difficult and one of the most desired levels to achieve as a model. However, the elusive looks needed by each designer are fleeting and ever changing. With patience, creativity, attitude, and a lot of luck, editorial modeling can be one of the most exciting careers in the industry.
